Love Comes Softly

We’ve been friends for a long, long time
I never thought to make you mine
Until I saw her kissing you
And pain pierced me through and through
This jealousy striking out of nowhere
Made me realize how much I care

Sometimes love comes in a fevered rush
An electric crush
But love can come softly, too
That’s how it was with me and you
First respect and feeling friendship grow
Then later, desire’s glow

And my love is no ordinary love
It’s a burning love, a forever love

I didn't tell anyone

I wandered through the shadows
Rock music echoing in my head
Missing all my broken pieces
And the dreams I thought lay dead
It’s not that I was unhappy
I don’t want you to think I’m sad
But there are times, perhaps you’ve noticed
My behavior’s just a little mad

I didn’t tell anyone that I saw Jesus
While I drifted with the nighttime birds
I had been seeking, seeking something
He spoke to me without any words
He radiated mercy and peace
The eye in a world gone manic
He looked gentle, almost ordinary
Though his presence was titanic

You remember me as I was
Look again because I have changed
My priorities re-positioned
Hopes and desires rearranged
Once upon a time we had something
We couldn’t define or pin down
It floated away down the river
Leaving both a tear and frown

I didn’t tell anyone that I saw Jesus
While I drifted with the nighttime birds
I had been seeking, seeking something
He spoke to me without any words
He radiated mercy and peace
The eye in a world gone manic
He looked gentle, almost ordinary
Though his presence was titanic

Now I choose to follow
Wherever that river winds
I wonder, will you come with me
To witness what my heart finds
I didn’t tell anyone that I saw Jesus
While I drifted with the nighttime birds
I had been seeking, seeking something
He spoke to me without any words

Teach Your Children

Please teach your children
Empathy and respect
Despite what generations
Have tainted, spoiled and wrecked

All those damaged men
Returning from the war
Is all the pain they carry
Worth what they were fighting for?
Say a prayer for those who lie
In muddy unmarked graves
Without a name, or wooden cross
Inscribed with, “Jesus Saves”

Please teach your children
Empathy and respect
Despite what they may endure
From prejudice and neglect

Those faces in the Pentagon
Just see numbers on a page
The games that they play now
Lack the honor of bygone days
The weapons are too lethal
The intentions all too cruel
And the media propaganda
Adds gasoline to the fuel

Please teach your children
Empathy and respect
So they will cry out in the darkness
Spreading light that care reflects

Only then can we evolve
Into angels that rise above
Only then can we build a world
Infused with peace and love
Please teach your children
Empathy and respect
Despite what generations
Have tainted, spoiled and wrecked
