Lara, did you see me diving from the train

I saw you from the window, eyes awash with rain

Lara, did you hear me calling out your name

I ran to catch you, but my attempt was in vain

Through the fighting and destruction

With wind and snow freezing all the men

I remembered how your body warmed me

Your eyes bottomless and your heart open

Through the years I never had a chance to sleep

Always an arm to stitch or a leg to try and keep

Digging through the blood and young men crying

The smell of fear and death, failing, trying

From a mansion of ice and snow you rode away

My streaked, frozen tears said all I had to say

Years here and gone, my heart drawn paper thin

You still dwell next to its bloodless beating within

I died there in the street thinking you were so near

My chest burst in agony as though pierced by a spear

I search for you forever from here to the beyond

Few ever find the joy that once we had found

Somewhere, I’ll meet you once again

A place and time with no winter pain

And the child I didn’t know we shared

Smiles while balalaika notes trill in the air

Lara, did you see me diving from the train

I saw you from the window, eyes awash with rain

Lara, did you hear me calling out your name

I ran to catch you, but my attempt was in vain
