When Aliens Come

There is beginning and ending and all things in between
But nothing on reflection is what in past it seemed
There are stories, myths and legends as children we had heard
But the lessons they imparted are now bent, blunted or blurred

There are dreams of paradise promised by religion and lore
But nirvana, like California, is a ruin of what it was before
Now nature’s beauty is buried beneath pavements and glass
And it is hard to understand why we let this come to pass

Oh, oh, oh… everything is changed or gone
Looking round for friends vanished in the throng
Oh, oh, oh… you’re standing confused and alone
Wondering, when you’re gone, who will write upon your stone

To lock out all the worry we live for the moment, for today
But if we don’t look to the future, how will we know the way?
And if we don’t choose to remember where we all came from
How can we interpret and improve the beating  drum?

Humans have been called a cancer on the earth
Ignoring God’s wisdom and Science’s truth
Destroying other life forms as though we have the right
Grasping short term treasure; the future out of sight

When the aliens come, I wonder where they’ll land
Will they splash down in the ocean? Leave tracks in the sand?
And when they figure out the mess we have made down here
Will they turn around and leave with no intentions and no fear?

Oh, oh, oh… everything is changed or gone
Looking round for friends vanished in the throng
Oh, oh, oh… you’re standing confused and alone
Wondering, when you’re gone, who will write upon your stone
