Surviving without thriving

A winter wind is blowing
And my heart is growing cold
I was once born young
Now I’m sick and feeling old

The hands on the analog clock
Are counting down my time
I can hear the ticking
As I write another rhyme

I know the reaper’s waiting
Just outside my door
If my legs and free will fail
He’ll find me on the floor

But while I have energy
I’ll outrun his bony touch
Surviving without thriving
Will have to be enough

Your Promise

I don’t do well with suffering
I feel sorry for myself
And I cry out in my anguish
Why is this the hand that I’ve been dealt?

Though I try, I’m not devoid of sin
For no one is completely pure within
So, I’m scared that You’ll reject me
 I worry You’ll forget me

And I pray:
Lord have Mercy
Christ have Mercy
Lord have Mercy on my soul
Then I turn back to Your Word
Reinforce all I’ve heard

You didn’t promise to prevent the pain
You didn’t promise to wash away the rain
Your only promise was to be right by my side
Through good and bad times, low and high tide

And I feel you close to me
As I try to be who I’m meant to be
Through troubles, I struggle to be brave
Even though it’s only ease I crave

And I pray:
Lord have Mercy
Christ have Mercy
Lord have Mercy on my soul
Then I turn back to Your Word
Reinforce all I’ve heard

You didn’t promise to prevent the pain
You didn’t promise to wash away the rain
Your only promise was to be right by my side
Through good and bad times, low and high tide

Your only promise was to be right by my side
Through good times and bad, low and high tide
And I feel you close to me
I feel you close to me…

After an Illness

I’ve lost the art of conversation
Can’t solve the simple equation
Spending too much time alone
Too much time at home
Just a broken fool
Battling demons cruel

Sometimes I think of you
And the things we used to do
And I’d like to fall back in
Hold you deep within
The feelings that once grew
Still alive and true

Such a handsome man
Your hands spoke with elan
Your voice a melodious chord
Playing my backbone keyboard
I reveled in the sound
While words became unwound

But seeing you again
Isn’t like it was back then
I can’t resurrect the past
If I could, it wouldn’t last
For I am not the same
No longer in the game

I’ve lost more than conversation
Can’t solve the simple equation
Prefer to be alone
Safe and secure at home
Just a broken fool
Battling demons cruel

No one said life was fair
Time steals the finest share
But memories are sweet
Even in retreat
And I’ll always hold you dear
In a dream free and clear

I’ve lost the art of conversation
Can’t solve the simple equation
Prefer to be alone
Safe and secure at home
Just a broken fool
Battling demons cruel
