Why I said 'I love you'

I said “I love you”

Because when I lay with you

I was overflowing

With an emotion I didn’t recognize...

Pondering in the quiet, secret hollows

Of my mind

As you held me tucked against your ribs

Your skin still hot, salty and rich

An epiphany: shocking, simple, pure--

A feeling I had known a long, long time ago--

 I was happy.

There in the cocoon of the bed sheets

Bodies replete

In a private, secret place

Far from the maelstrom of real life

I had found home.

Why did you do it?

Why did you do what you do, what you did to me
I want some explanations
We’d better meet and talk about it
Over strong libations

I thought you were my friend, my friend until the end
But I was disappointed
I had you on a pedestal, you fell
No longer the anointed

You dealt me a blow; a blow that left me low
I need some explanations
I feel so down--- to lift my frown
I’m chanting feel-good incantations

I don't believe your claim, that you’re not to blame
You must think me a fool
You’ve played me and betrayed me
You broke the golden rule

You say you’ll make amends and still be friends
But this is where our friendship ends
You’ve been unjust; lost my trust
My belief in you turned to dust

You make no sense, could never recompense
For what you’ve done
I realize, damn your eyes, I never really knew you
What we had is gone, or never was

Wish I could turn back the clock ignore your knock
And never get to know you
We would go our separate ways, I’d enjoy my days
And never get to know you
How I wish, I’d never got to know you

My Gentle Friend

Au revoir my gentle friend
We both know we face the end
You came to me when life was low
Taught me much I didn’t know
It will be so hard to let you go

Though crying now, I intend
Not to focus on the end
Instead, your life I’ll celebrate
The joy and laughter you create
Your loyalty beyond debate

You taught me many simple things
To kiss and stretch when day begins
Wiggling greetings at the door
Playing and walking by the shore
Sharing treats, and so much more

You run in circles just for joy
Proudly present me with a toy
You epitomize trust and constancy
Dark eyes deeper than the sea
And you love me unconditionally

No member of the human race
Can compare or replace
Your warnings and protective care
The shining goodness you lay bare
The companionship we two share
Au revoir my gentle friend
We both know we face the end
You came to me when life was low
Loved me and helped me grow
Wish I didn't have to let you go

First Love

First Love

Went looking for my first love
To see how she’d moved on
Back in that small town
Where I once belonged

Found out she’s still single
After heartbreaks just like mine
Saw her from a distance
She still looked oh, so fine

Called her on the telephone
Her voice still mellow sweet
Asked if she remembered
Asked if we could meet

I was nervous to see her again
Trembling hands and butterflies
But my angst simply vanished
With a gaze into her eyes

We shared a meal and had a drink
We talked the whole night through
“What brought you here?” she asked
“I came hoping to find you

“I never could forget you
You’re still underneath my skin
I want to keep on seeing you
Get to know you once again

“You were my first love
But you slipped away from me
Now I want to find out
If we have a different destiny

"We’ll go slowly if you want to
We’ll go quickly if you prefer
Discover if we’re the same or different
Compared to what we were”

Went looking for my first love
Lost when life intervened
But now she is my last love
And the answer to my dreams
