My Gentle Friend

Au revoir my gentle friend
We both know we face the end
You came to me when life was low
Taught me much I didn’t know
It will be so hard to let you go

Though crying now, I intend
Not to focus on the end
Instead, your life I’ll celebrate
The joy and laughter you create
Your loyalty beyond debate

You taught me many simple things
To kiss and stretch when day begins
Wiggling greetings at the door
Playing and walking by the shore
Sharing treats, and so much more

You run in circles just for joy
Proudly present me with a toy
You epitomize trust and constancy
Dark eyes deeper than the sea
And you love me unconditionally

No member of the human race
Can compare or replace
Your warnings and protective care
The shining goodness you lay bare
The companionship we two share
Au revoir my gentle friend
We both know we face the end
You came to me when life was low
Loved me and helped me grow
Wish I didn't have to let you go
