Seeking Love in the Afternoon

We grew up in the afternoon
On the big bed in my Mama’s room
Sun sneaking past the window blind
Bodies needing what we chose to find
Too old to cry, too young to know
What we held, we’d soon outgrow
So many fish still in the sea
Taunting us and swimming free

Life is crazy, life is fun
Life moves on before it’s done
First you’re young, and then you’re not
Did you ever know what you then forgot?
The car is speeding down the interstate
Always worried that you might be late
Never mind, we’ll be home soon
Seeking love in the afternoon

The air is heavy, the tears are hot
You plan your life then plans are shot
Settle back to enjoy the ride
Forever hiding the pain inside
It’s the ache of always wanting more
Yet don’t know what you’re looking for
Yearning for some elusive high
Never knowing, always asking why

If I could go back and do it again
I’d know how and I’d know when
I’d take you back to my Mama’s room
With the sun soaking out the gloom
I’d hold on to what we had
When life was easy and never sad
But life is only once around
What’s lost is lost and never found

Life is crazy, life is fun
Life moves on before it’s done
First you’re young, and then you’re not
Did you ever know what you then forgot?
The car is speeding down the interstate
Always worried that you might be late
Never mind, we’ll be home soon
Seeking love in the afternoon

Victoria is nothing like Europe

I walk among the ruins of Rome
And I can hear the chariot wheels
Feel the thrum of horse’s hooves
Hear crowds roar in the Coliseum
The day is hot with ancient air
Ghosts on my skin glow like neon
Makes me think, makes me remember
This whole city is a grand museum

There are places that raise the spirit
There are others that weigh you down
There are people who make you happy
And others who will tear you down
Sometimes I travel with a friend
Sometimes I choose to go it alone
I’ve enjoyed all the places I’ve been
But  I'm happiest when I come back home

Victoria is nothing like Europe
The wind is fresh off the Juan de Fuca
Visiting Rome is a walk in the past
Living here is embracing the future
When I return and step off a plane
I smell the sea and the vegetation
I’m in awe of the indigenous beauty
Paradise is nature's creation

Sometimes I travel with a friend
Sometimes I choose to go it alone
I’ve enjoyed all the places I’ve been
But I'm happiest when I come back home

Marrakesh

I got tired of the winter snows
Parkas, mukluks and woolen clothes
Jack Frost etching the window panes
Icy winds bringing on chilblains
So I moved down to Marrakesh
Oh, I moved down to Marrakesh

It’s an old Berber-Arabian town
Where all nationalities abound
Shimmering under the African sun
Frenetic, crazy carnival fun
I could get used to Marrakesh
Oh, I could get used to Marrakesh

Meandering alleys confuse like a maze
Overlaid with noise, scents and haze
Tiling, and ancient artistry thrives
Too much to see in 20 lives
Spend my time exploring Marrakesh
Spend my time exploring Marrakesh

The medina’s walled and densely packed
Teeming souks with shelves all stacked
Color and madness on the desert sand
Snake charmers, drugs, donkey cabs on hand
I could lose myself in Marrakesh
Oh, I could lose myself in Marrakesh

Crowds of people, endless things to do
But I find myself missing you
Sometimes I’m lonely down to the bone
Guess it’s time for me to go back home
So I’m gonna be leaving Marrakesh
Yes, I’m gonna be leaving Marrakesh

I’ll miss the mosques call to prayer,
Islamic architecture abundant there
The beautiful artisan heritage
French, Spanish everything verbiage
My heart will ache for Marrakesh
Oh, my heart will ache for Marrakesh
