I have died a time or two
The same can be said for you
We are like cats with many lives
Starting as kids asking for “high fives”
Once an athlete slapping a puck
Until you’re injured and out of luck
Or a student studying in the library
Figuring out what you want to be
The individuals you used to be
Are gone except for memory
The changes that come gradually
We adapt to seamlessly
But when change comes with a blow
We rage and cry at a faceless foe
But no matter what we’ve tried
The one you used to be has died
Parents with a little one
Pushing swings in the summer sun
Business person in a snazzy suit
Passed over for a new recruit
Friends with someone at the club
Until situations create a snub
Everything that once was strong
Withers and with time is gone
Parents of rebellious teens
Arguing always, or so it seems
Eventually they drift away
When all you want is for them to stay
You are now free to rest
Knowing those years were the best
And no matter what you’ve tried
The one you used to be has died
I have died a time or two
The same can be said for you
With many lives we are like cats
Often wearing many hats
What we were, no one can see
As we drift toward eternity
We all know what’s in store
We’ll die again, then live once more
