Reconnecting with old friends over cake and tea
Remembering old times when you were young and free
Dishing about old loves long left behind
Laughing at how you could have been so blind
Catching up on children’s lives and new news
Listening to old music, mainly jazz and blues
Leaving out all the heartache and tears
Wondering why you lost touch over the years
Until someone says, “I heard that you…”
Lying to them, saying, “That isn’t true.”
They know you’re fibbing because they know you
These old friends that you never outgrew
You feel a hand on your hand, saying, “It’s OK
We’ll accept whatever you choose to say”
These friends don’t
share a chromosome
But being with them is like coming home
Your gesture deprecating; then you say:
Ah hell, you all know me all too well
"Over the years I’ve had some troubles and pain
You all could probably say the same
But right now let’s keep things light
Don’t want to defend, don’t want to fight"
Everyone nods, they all agree and then
Change the topic to something easy again
These friends don’t share a chromosome
But being with them is like coming home
